Cyprus has much to learn from the German republic and its past reunification, President Nicos Anastasiades has said.
In an address at the German Embassy on the occasion of the anniversary of German Unity, Anastasiades expressed that Cyprus and Germany, “so different and yet so similar”, have a lot to share with one another, and even more to jointly offer to “our common European family and beyond.”
Following the example of Germany, the President reiterated his commitment to reaching a comprehensive, viable and fair solution to the Cyprus problem, one which will bring the two communities together under the most positive conditions.
“In times of crisis like these, where geopolitical uncertainty, war, uprooting, and human migration are just some of the problems facing Europe today, it is important to recall our own experiences, and to draw inspiration from the success story of the reunification of Europe and the founding of the European Union. Germany, a country at the forefront of all these historical developments, is rightly called on today to provide both solidarity and leadership in these trying times,” he said.
Cyprus and its people, the President continued, may draw courage and inspiration from the German reunification and may in turn provide an example for further peaceful solutions in the region and beyond in the future.
“The reunification of Cyprus will complete the project that started in 1989: the reunification of the whole of Europe,” he concluded emphatically.
