President Anastasiades has stated that this is not the right time to host a multilateral conference on the Cyprus issue, pointing out that differences still remain but that both he and the Turkish Cypriot leader are determined to work together at the negotiating table to overcome them, In Cyprus reports.
Asked if he was invited by UNSG Special Advisor on Cyprus, Espen Barth Eide, to a conference in Davos in late January, Anastasiades said, “This is not the time for a multilateral conference, differences remain but we are both determined to work with mutual understanding to overcome the concerns of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities.”
He explained however, that he will be participating at the economic forum in Davos “My intention is not to participate in a multilateral conference. I will attend the international economic forum, which has nothing to do with the Cyprus issue. But if there are, and there will be, bilateral meetings, these will be held in the context of what we are seeking, what we wish for, what should be a viable solution to the Cyprus problem.”
Speaking at the Presidential Palace after the meeting with Mustafa Akinci, President Anastasiades said they discussed the property issue and many other important issues regarding the Cyprus problem, In Cyprus mentions.
“No doubt the property issue is one of the most difficult problems, just as territorial adjustments are, and the issue of guarantees, in addition to the timeframe for the withdrawal of the Turkish occupation troops,” he stated.
“What we are seeking, is a comprehensive, overall view of all the parameters in order to achieve a sustainable, functional and lasting solution to the Cyprus problem. We do not wish to see winners or losers.”
He expressed confidence that this also meets the expectations of the Turkish Cypriot leadership and the Turkish Cypriots themselves.
He further pointed out that there is no a problem as concerns the return of the Turkish occupied town of Morphou to the Greek Cypriot constituent state, in the context of a solution.
Anastasiades and Akinci also scheduled their next meetings on the island for the 7th, 14th and 29th January 2016”.
